Piscicover — Pool and pool cover glossary

A guide to the materials, components and care of your pool, whether you are choosing a cover or planning its maintenance.

Definitions

A

Above-ground pool cover

An installation with the cover roller above water level, usually at one end of the pool. It offers a different integration option from a submerged cover. Planning needs to account for the surrounding space and the finish of the mechanism.

Algae

Organisms that can grow in pool water and on damp surfaces, including the joints between cover slats. Their appearance can be associated with water conditions, light and accumulated dirt. Cleaning a cover complements the pool's regular water care.

Automatic pool cover

A motorised system that extends and retracts a cover over the water. It makes covering a pool between uses more convenient and reduces its exposure to the surroundings. The position of the roller and its integration are chosen to suit each installation.

C

Control unit

The electrical assembly that manages a motorised cover's operation. It connects to the components specified for the installed model. Installation, electrical checks and any alterations should be carried out by a professional following the equipment documentation.

Cover roller

The assembly that retracts and stores a cover when the pool is opened. It includes the shaft and the components needed to drive and support the system. Depending on the project, it can sit above the water or be integrated within the pool.

Cover slat descaling

Cleaning intended to remove mineral deposits attached to the surface of a slatted cover. Products and methods need to be compatible with the material. Inspection helps distinguish deposits from dirt, wear or damage that requires a different intervention.

Custom pool cover

A cover sized and configured for a particular pool. The design needs to account for the pool shape, steps, edges and available space for storing the cover. Measuring the pool is therefore part of selecting the right system.

F

Filtration

The process of trapping suspended particles as water passes through the pool filter. It is part of pool water care and remains necessary with a cover installed. Filtering and covering a pool serve different, complementary purposes.

L

Limescale deposits

Mineral deposits that can appear on surfaces in contact with water, including cover slats. They may form a film or an attached build-up. Removal requires a method compatible with the cover, and recurring deposits can indicate that water care needs reviewing.

Limit switch

A setting or device that determines where a motorised mechanism stops when opening or closing. For an automatic pool cover, it defines the end positions of travel. Checking and adjusting it is a task for the system's technical service.

P

Polycarbonate (PC)

A plastic material used in certain pool cover slats. It allows different finishes, including models with a solar function. Choosing between PC and PVC should be based on the specific product, the installation design and the desired appearance.

Pool cover slats

Individual profiles connected to form a retractable pool cover. Their design allows the cover to articulate as it winds onto the roller. Materials and finishes vary, so selection should consider appearance as well as compatibility with the installation.

Pool evaporation

The change from liquid water to vapour at the pool surface. It causes water and heat loss. Keeping a pool covered between uses helps reduce that exposure; actual savings vary with wind, temperature and patterns of use.

Pool shell

The structure that contains the pool water. Its shape, dimensions, steps and edges affect the measurement of a custom cover and the options for integrating a roller. It is one of the elements assessed before an installation is specified.

Preventive maintenance

Scheduled inspections and care to detect wear or faults before they affect a cover's operation. This can include cleaning, inspecting slats and checking mechanical and electrical components. Piscicover offers an annual maintenance contract to organise ongoing care for the installation.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride)

A plastic material used in slats and other pool components. For a pool cover, the product's profile and finish determine its characteristics in use. Not all PVC slats should be assumed to have identical performance or maintenance requirements.

R

Roller shaft

The rotating component onto which a pool cover winds. It forms part of the roller and transmits the movement used to open and close the cover. Its size and supports are selected for the width and configuration of the installation.

S

Skimmer

A component that collects water and floating debris near the pool surface and directs them towards the filtration circuit. Its operation depends in part on a suitable water level. Cover design should take its position and water circulation into account.

Slatted pool cover

A cover made of connected profiles that float on the water and wind onto a roller. The slats form a continuous, articulated surface. Their material, finish and configuration affect the appearance and performance of the complete cover.

Solar slats

Slats designed to capture solar energy and transfer heat to pool water. Performance depends on the model and its exposure conditions. Alongside choosing a finish, it is necessary to follow the manufacturer's specific installation and care instructions for these slats.

Submerged pool cover

An installation with the roller below water level, for example in a recess within the pool shell. This allows the mechanism to be visually discreet. Suitability depends on the pool's construction and the space available for the system.

T

Thermal insulation

The ability to limit heat transfer between the water and its surroundings. A pool cover helps retain water temperature between uses. Its effect depends on the cover design, the weather and how the cover is used.

Tubular motor

A cylindrical motor that can be integrated within a roller shaft. It drives opening and closing in compatible systems. Not every installation uses the same motor arrangement, so selecting it is part of the cover's technical design.

W

Water circulation

The movement of water through a pool's circulation circuit. It helps distribute temperature and carries water to the treatment equipment. A cover does not replace this circuit: operation needs to match the pool's requirements and the manufacturer's instructions.

Water level

The height of the water inside the pool shell. It affects equipment such as skimmers and the position of a floating cover. It needs to remain within the range specified for the installation, following the instructions for the pool equipment and cover.

Winterisation

Preparing a pool and its cover for an extended period of reduced use. The work depends on the climate, the installation type and whether filtration continues to operate. The winterisation plan should follow the instructions for each piece of equipment.
